Stig Anton Nielsen PhD Architect  contact

Arts, science and philosophy are topics in which I am interested. More specifically cognition, artificial intelligence, material computation and fabrication that, by the way, all seem to meet in robotics. In 2008 I received my Master of Architecture at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, School of Architecture, Copenhagen, with the project, ‘Metro Mechanics’. In the years 2008-2012 I worked both at the at the Danish architecture office COBE, and research Center for IT and Architecture (CITA). At CITA I explored computation, material properties in relation to fabrication, large scale CNC fabrication, rapid prototyping and robotic assembly.

I have been teaching at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts and Chalmers University of Technology, and led several international workshops on physical computation. Between 2012 and 2017 I did a PhD at Chalmers University of Technology, Dept. of Architecture under the ‘Architecture in the Making’ project in close collaboration with researchers from the dept. of applied IT. During my PhD, I was consulting F&P Personal Robotics in Zurich. During 2014 I was Guest Researcher at the Chair for Computer Aided Architectural Design (CAAD) at ITA, ETH. In 2015 I founded the M’aterial A’ctuation and K’inetic E’xperimentation Laboratory (MAKE Lab) at Chalmers University of Technology, which gives architecture students the opportunity to rethink temporal and mechanical aspects into their projects through a maker-inspired approach.

Currently I am a Postdoc at the Computer Science Department at ITU, and part of the REAL. I am currently designing, constructing and programming the fabrication machines for Continous Braided Filament Structures under the EU-funded project Flora Robotica.
